Meeting to review works in unapproved layouts

Water lines, street lights in the first phase

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore Corporation will take stock of the situation in more than 500 unapproved layouts in the city in order to begin development works.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam says a meeting with officials will be held on Wednesday to know how many works have been initiated. The Corporation wants to provide drinking water lines and street lights in the first phase of development in all these layouts, he says.

Almost 90 per cent of the unapproved layouts have been regularised under the Government's scheme for the regularisation of house sites.

"Only 10 per cent of the layouts may have been left out, primarily because of some sites coming under the Land Ceiling Act," he says. The Corporation has sought exemption from the Act for these sites so that the residents who bought them without knowing their status will not be deprived of their lands.

The Corporation plans to first provide water lines in these layouts as summer has begun.

The civic body does not want to waste anymore time as, according to the Mayor, the people have waited for a long time for drinking water through house connections.

"We want to hasten works to provide drinking water. At the same time, we also want to repair or replace all the broken taps in the public fountains (roadside taps)," the Mayor says. The aim is to ensure there is no problem in getting water during summer. "A smooth supply is what we want even if the water level in the Siruvani Dam dips."

At the same time, even if there is any problem on the Siruvani front, enough bore well water should be made available to the public. So, the Corporation's focus is on checking whether all the bore wells and supply lines are in good condition.

The Corporation will give due attention to the water situation across the city, even as special efforts for the unapproved layouts are on.
