Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Softening its earlier stand, the Government here on Tuesday announced that special examinations would be conducted in May/June for the candidates who were not allowed to appear in the ongoing Intermediate examinations on the grounds of insufficient attendance. Both arts and science students--first year as well as second year--can avail themselves of this facility. Special coaching classes will be conducted in March-April to prepare them for the special exams. Responding to a persistent plea by CPI (M) members in the Assembly, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy said these students could now opt for the special examinations. No mention would be made of the "special exams" either in their marksheets or certificates to be issued to them. Further, both first and second year students could opt for this special exam even after appearing in the current examinations. Only the best or highest marks of the two examinations obtained in a subject would be indicated in the marksheet. The Chief Minister quoted rules of the Board of Intermediate Education to say that 75 per cent attendance was compulsory for first as well as second year students. However, 15 per cent of this could be condoned if the student showed "valid and genuine" reasons. There was no scope of allowing any student if the attendance was below 60 per cent even after condoning the 15 per cent. He said the board's insistence on 75 per cent attendance had greatly improved not only attendance of students but also their performance.
