THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The late lyricist and filmmaker P. Bhaskaran was a poet who epitomised the true spirit of Vedanta in his works, lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi has said.

He was delivering the P. Bhaskaran memorial lecture at a programme organised by the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy here on Tuesday.

The speciality of P. Bhaskaran was that he painted pictures with words through his film songs and poems. "He was at heart a painter. That is why he was able to make such good movies. He was also a great worshipper of nature, a great love-poet and a great philosopher," Mr. Thampi said.

The poetic skills of P. Bhaskaran were no doubt shaped by the influence of his father, N. Padmanabha Menon. "Our relationship lasted 37 long years. But when I went to see him about two months ago, he did not recognise me. But when I sang a song of his, there was a spark of recognition. When I sang `Engine nee marakkum kuyile... ' he sang along. That is the last time I saw him alive," the lyricist recounted.

The memorial lecture was followed by a musical tribute to P. Bhaskaran. The songs were interspersed with clippings from famous `Bhaskaran' movies. The tribute got off to a start with poet Madhusoodhanan Nair rendering Bhaskaran's famous work `Vayalar Garjikkunnu.' Then it was the turn of veteran playback singer K.P. Udayabhanu to present the evergreen number `Anuraga nadakathin... ' The noted poem `Orkkuka Vallappozhum' was rendered in Hindustani style by vocalist Ramesh Narayanan. The song `Kayalarikathu valayerinjappol... ' from the P. Bhaskaran movie `Neelakkuyil' and `Swaranamukile swapnamkanarundo... ' were among the songs presented.
