Congress' defeat

This refers to Sonia Gandhi's statement that price rise was a factor behind the Congress' defeat in the elections to the Punjab and Uttarakhand Assemblies (March 7). It is time the Manmohan Singh Government tackled inflation and price rise earnestly. It is not enough for leaders to say the Government is doing its best. The people want results.

The Congress came to power with the aam aadmi prevailing over India Shining. It is the middle class that holds the key to power. The Government cannot afford to leave the problems faced by the people belonging to this group unaddressed. It is worth remembering that in 1998, the BJP government was voted out of power in Delhi due to the rising price of onion.

Ms. Gandhi has attributed the electoral reverses to the lack of unity among the partymen, besides price rise. Infighting in the Congress is nothing new.

The party has been winning elections despite it and Ms. Gandhi has always been credited for the victories. It is only appropriate that she owns responsibility for the defeats too.

Ms. Gandhi's statement that price rise has affected the party's show in the two States is no doubt true. But its intolerant and meddlesome attitude towards the non-Congress ruled States or in the States where it is not an ally, and corruption are major factors responsible for its dismal performance.
