KOCHI: Even as students of Classes X and XII of CBSE-affiliated schools are appearing for their public examinations, the Yuvajanavedi, youth wing of the CPI(ML), called a State-wide hartal from midnight on Wednesday to 6 p.m. on Thursday. The hartal is in protest against the State Government's decision to accept loan from the Asian Development Bank for the Sustainable Urban Development Project. Hospitals, medical and ambulance service, milk and newspaper supply and wedding-related travel have been exempted from the hartal. Asked if schoolchildren taking the CBSE examinations would be exempted, a CPI(ML) leader said the decision for the hartal had been taken a month ago and the Government could have made alternative arrangements.
Exemption sought
T.P.M. Ibrahim Khan, president of the Kerala CBSE Schools Management Association, urged the hartal organisers to exempt the schoolchildren appearing for the examinations from the purview of the hartal. He said the all-India examinations for Classes X and XII were held in India as well as at examination centres in other countries. The authorities would not postpone the examinations in the wake of the hartal. Mr. Khan urged parents and teachers to take the children to the examination centres. Stickers saying `CBSE exam' should be put up prominently on the vehicles transporting the schoolchildren.
LDF slams hartal call
Special Correspondent writes from Thiruvananthapuram: Meanwhile, LDF convener Vaikom Viswan has come out strongly against the 12-hour hartal called by the CPI(ML) on Thursday to protest against the LDF Government's decision to take loan from the ADB. Mr. Viswan described the hartal call `anti-people' and said it was intended only to defame the LDF Government.
