KOCHI: DP World, which operates the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal at Kochi Port through India Gateway Terminals Private Ltd, has made arrangements to ensure smooth flow of cargo containers to the port in the wake of Venduruthy Bridge, the sole rail link to the port, being damaged in an accident on February 24. Containers from the inland container depot (ICT) at Whitefield (Bangalore) will reach the Ernakulam Marshalling Yard from where it will be transported to the box terminal until the rail traffic is normalised, said a press release from DP World here. Import containers moving between Kochi and Bangalore will also be similarly road-bridged, said the press release. The Cochin Port Trust, DP World and the Container Corporation of India (Concor) have made arrangements among themselves to ensure that the shippers do not incur any additional cost on account of the suspension of rail traffic on Venduruthy Bridge, said the press release. It said that shippers had welcomed the initiative in the background of export-import traffic between Kochi and Bangalore increasing significantly. Concor-scheduled services between Bangalore and Kochi and the operation of mainline vessels from Kochi to China and the U.S. East Coast are some of the major reasons for this increase, the press release added.
