AIADMK plans `direct action' on Cauvery

Special correspondent

Will come out with details of agitation

CHENNAI: All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will launch a "direct action" programme on the Cauvery issue, its general secretary Jayalalithaa said on Wednesday.

She will come out with details of the agitation shortly, Ms. Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

She criticised Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for "having failed" to defend the interests of farmers of the Cauvery delta.

Ms. Jayalalithaa asked Mr. Karunanidhi whether he could obtain legal opinion that following the State Government's move to approach the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal for clarification on the final award, the Centre would not be able to gazette the award or implement it. If the Chief Minister furnished such an opinion to recognised parties, she would nominate lawyers to represent her position for a debate.

Ms. Jayalalithaa explained how the previous AIADMK Government took steps for safeguarding the interests of farmers.
