Guntur
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: The Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), Guntur, has set a new benchmark in delivering quality services to its clientele, Food Corporation of India, Guntur, area manager N. Ambalgon said. The CWC, reeling under losses until recently, had made an impressive turnaround over the last couple of years, improving its occupancy rate from a dismal 19.5 per cent in 2004 to a record 82 per cent in 2006, he said at the golden jubilee celebrations of the CWC here on Wednesday. The CWC was established in Guntur in 1957 with a limited storage capacity of 2,000 tonnes. Since then, it had grown into one of the largest warehouses in the country with a capacity of 29, 000 tonnes and presently has nine godowns. The FCI would extend its full cooperation by fulfilling its mandatory requirement of storing 1,120 metric tonnes in the CWC, he said. Complimenting the CWC for achieving the record growth, Cotton Corporation of India deputy general manager Avtar Singh said that the CCI had stored 60,000 bales of cotton in the CWC in 2006-2007. Cotton farmers were buoyant this year after getting a minimum support price of Rs.2, 010 per quintal at the start of the season and expressed optimism that the MSP would increase in the days to come.
Innovative programmes
Corporation area manager M. Usha Rani said that the CWC had taken up several innovative programmes last year, including the Farmers Extension Service Scheme (FESS), where in its personnel conducted awareness camps in villages about the use of pesticides. ``We had educated 2,200 farmers across the district in the FESS,'' she said. The CWC had also taken up pest control management project in the South Central Railway, Guntur Division, sanitising the railway bogies. Area manager of IFFCO, Vijayawada K. Rajagopala Reddy and SCR senior divisional engineer P. Ravi Kumar were present.
