Gowda, others stage dharna

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Cutting across party lines, members of Parliament from Karnataka staged a dharna outside Parliament House building on Wednesday morning to protest against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. Among those who sat on dharna were former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ananth Kumar.

The dharna was staged a day after Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee convened a meeting of MPs from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to decide on Karnataka's demand for a discussion on the award under Rule 193. With no consensus emerging, the matter is pending with the Speaker.

Meanwhile, missing the Karnataka presence in the House, Mr. Chatterjee urged members from the State to attend proceedings. He also asked other members to make a similar appeal. However, it was soon pointed out that Mr. Gowda had come in for a while. And, a couple of backbencher members from Karnataka marked their presence by standing up.
