KOCHI: Health is one of the most neglected facets of a woman's life. Every year, when the International Women's Day (on March 8) is celebrated, it is the health issue that tops the list of concerns among women. The women's wing of IMA Cochin West is organising an awareness programme on the importance of administering rubella vaccine to girls on Thursday at the Community Hall in Mattancherry. The disease, also known as German measles, affects the foetus. The pregnant woman may not develop any complication but the baby may develop congenital problems and other anomalies. It is important that girls take the vaccine before marriage, said Shaila Kammath, member of the IMA women's wing. Another awareness programme is on urinary stress incontinence in women organised by Rotary Club of Metropolis at Avenue Centre. Domestic violence has been in focus recently. The State Social Welfare Board and Cultural Academy for Peace will jointly organise a Workshop on Domestic Violence Act on Friday at the Town Hall. The Ernakulam Social Service Society held the Women's Day celebration on Wednesday. K. Usha, former judge, inaugurated the meeting on Women and Law. She said that cases of sexual harassment are becoming common in society. In spite of protection provided to women in the Indian Constitution, women continue to be exploited in all fronts, she said. A public meeting was held on the occasion.
