Two arrested for attempting suicide

Bangalore: The Basaveshwaranagar police on Wednesday arrested two persons who reportedly attempted to commit suicide by dousing themselves with kerosene.

The incident occurred when the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike officials on Wednesday tried to remove the encroachments that had come up on its land. The encroachment removal drive was led by Executive Engineer of the Rajajinagar division M.M. Naik. Three sheds had been built illegally on BBMP land at 3rd Cross, Manivilas Garden in Basaveshwaranagar police station limits. The BBMP officials said the sheds were encroaching 3,600 sq. ft. of BBMP land. When the BBMP team tried to demolish the sheds, two persons protested. They reportedly tried to commit suicide by dousing themselves with kerosene. The names of the arrested were given as Mahadevaiah (42) and Venkatesh (40).

Newborn killed

In a tragic incident, a three-day-old baby girl was killed in an accident near Pantharpalya on Nayandahalli Main Road, coming under Byatarayanapura Traffic Police Station limits. The police said that Latha (22), the mother, was walking with her mother Bhagyamma when a car bearing a Tamil Nadu registration number hit her. She dropped the baby who suffered a head injury and died on the spot. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.

Mobile phone snatched

Two men on a motorcycle threatened Abhishek Jaboor, an employee of a software company, with a knife and snatched a mobile phone from him near the Corporation Park, 6th Main, MICO Layout at around 9.30 p.m. Tuesday night. Mr. Jaboor was walking back home when he was mugged.

Laptop stolen

A laptop estimated at Rs. 40,000 was stolen from a car that was parked on 100-Foot Road in Indiranagar on Tuesday around 10 p.m. The police said Amit Patil, a software engineer, had left the laptop in his car, which he had parked near a restaurant to have dinner.

Suicide

K.R. Kamaraj (48), a milk vendor, on Tuesday night reportedly committed suicide at his residence near Jai Maruthi Circle, coming in Nandini Layout police station limits. The police said that Kamaraj, an alcoholic, reportedly mixed poison with his drink.

Food poisoning

The food poisoning caused by contaminated semolina claimed another life on Tuesday. Meena (13), who was being treated at a private hospital in Basaveshwaranagar, died late Tuesday night. With her death, the toll due to semolina poisoning has increased to seven.

Three burglars arrested

The special squad formed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Soumendhu Mukherji has solved several burglary cases reported in Madiwala, MICO Layout, Hanumanthnagar, K.R. Puram, Mahadevapura, Yeshwanthpur, Mulabagal and Chittoor. The team on February 26 arrested Muniraju alias Balaji alias Hargadde Muniraj (33) of Arasanahalli in Anekal taluk. Based on the information provided by him, Venkatesh alias Ramalesh alias Mulabagilu Venkatesh (32) of Hosapalya of Mulabagilu, and Seena alias Srinivas (25) of Bharathinagar of Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu were arrested.
