This Day That Age
The Congress Party has secured an absolute majority in Assam to form a Government by winning 55 seats in the 108-member Assembly. In Madras State, three women candidates, all Congress, were elected to the State Assembly on March 8. Maintaining its run of victories in the general elections, the party annexed 11 out of the 13 seats for which results have so far been announced. Mr. Bhakthavatsalu Naidu, Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, is among those returned. The three women elected on the Congress ticket are Mrs. Soundaram Ramachandran from the Vedasandur constituency in Madurai district, Srimathi Kamalaambujammal from the Gummidipundi constituency in Chingleput district and Srimathi Kulanthai Ammal from the Sulur constituency in Coimbatore district. A prominent leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Mr. V.R. Nedunchezhiyan, was defeated by the Congress candidate in the Salem constituency by a narrow majority of 207 votes.
