Awakening shakti through art, culture

Special Correspondent

  • Dance programme to be held on March 16
  • Women who excelled in their fields will be felicitated

MYSORE: For a city that stakes with pride its claim as a cultural capital, it was only expected that some of the cultural forums here would think out of the box on ways to celebrate International Women's Day.

And true to expectations, KRISHNE, The Dance School, which was formed to promote a healthy environment for dance and nurture artistic talent, has announced a slew of cultural activities to mark the day.

The programme will be held on March 16 at Jaganmohan Palace and the theme is "Shakti... The Light." Sudha Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka State Open University, will inaugurate the programme, which includes a Bharatanatya recital by Vidhushi Dimple followed by Sugama Sangeetha by H.R. Ramya and party from Mandya and Kamsaale Nritya by the girls of Tanumana Cultural Group from Mysore.

A salient feature of the programme will be the felicitation of a few women who have breached what was traditionally a men's bastion and excelled in it.

As the organisers explained, these women have taken up what hitherto was reckoned to be jobs that are the prerogative of men. So K. Ningamma, the only female bus driver in the State, N. Suvarna, a female bus conductor and Roopa, mobile telephone booth operator, will be honoured for excelling in their respective fields.

And with this KRISHNE wishes to reawaken `shakti' or women's power in society through art and culture. The programme will begin at 6 p.m. and will be another feather in the cap of the organisation, which has many such programmes to its credit. The Dance School not only provides a platform for classical dance, but is also working to popularise all forms of Indian art.
