SALEM: Processions and functions marked World Women's Day here on Thursday. Girl students from Vinayaka Mission Medical College Hospital took out a rally in which they raised slogans against the female foeticide. They called it a crime against humanity. They also asked the people to desist from sex selective abortions. Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini flagged off the rally, which covered the important areas in the city. University Director N. Chandrasekar and others participated. Salem District Women's Federation organised a meeting in which the Mayor addressed the gathering. She urged the participants to hold awareness programmes on women's issues and pointed out that collective participation was essential to achieve 33 per cent reservation in Parliament.
Celebrations
Women' Day celebrations were also organised at Sona College of Technology in which chairperson of SJS Educational Group of Institutions Danalakshmi Jayashankar participated. Women's day was observed in Government College of Engineering also. Kurinchi Mahalir Iyakkam and VRDP jointly organsied a seminar to mark the day.
