Sand miners make merry

Good times are back for those involved in sand-mining in the Periyar waters. The desilting of the Kallarkutty dam generated huge deposits of sand. Long queues of lorries were seen at various kadavus to extract maximum sand in the last week.

Hundreds rushed to these spots to get a share of the huge reserve. The greens point out that indiscriminate mining is on at various places. There are no officials to check the number of loads of sand taken from each kadavu, they say. Rampant mining continues in various kadavus in the Periyar, thanks to the buoyant construction industry in Ernakulam district.
