Staff Reporter

The system must be restructured, says Sam Pitroda

Participants at the UKIERI conference in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

HYDERABAD: Sam Pitroda, Chairman of National Knowledge Commission, has said reforms in Indian education is not the concern of India alone but a global issue since India's 500 million youth are going to be the world's workforce in the future.

He called for a national-level discussion on the recommendations of the Knowledge Commission since only public pressure can compel the Government to bring in the necessary changes in the area of educational reforms.

He expressed these views while addressing a gathering of educationists and policy makers through a videoconference from Chicago at the two-day seminar on `Collaborative deliver of higher education programme in India: UK and India achieving best practice', being organised by UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI), on Wednesday.

Mr. Pitroda felt the education system must be restructured from the lowest level to the research level. There was a need to debate these issues at all levels of power and also small towns. Mr. Pitroda expressed the view that it was time to examine the impact of reservations on society.

Private players

Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) Chairman K.C. Reddy said private players' role was inevitable to improve quantum and quality. He, however, said there was need for strong regulatory mechanism to ensure transparency in administration and fee and education that was relevant to society.

Rod Pryde, Director, British Council, said UKIERI would promote India-British cooperation from school level to research level for mutual benefit.
