Letters to the Editor
The arrest on Sunday of 280 people assembled in a farmhouse near Pune to participate in a rave organised by suspected international drug peddlers was shocking. The indiscriminate media coverage of the incident gave the impression that they were not merely youngsters incidentally caught on the wrong side of the law but hardened criminals being hauled up for a heinous crime. The police could have surely shown greater efficiency in dealing with those arrested since only seven persons were found in possession of narcotics.

One wonders what the need was for such cultural policing when hardcore criminals are freely roaming the streets of rural Pune. While there is no justification for the waywardness of the youth who had assembled, the police action appears to be high-handed. Why did they wait for the revellers to assemble and then arrest each one of them irrespective of whether he or she consumed the banned drugs?
