COIMBATORE: Shanti Ashram, a voluntary organisation here, celebrated Mahalir Mela 2007 on Thursday with cultural programmes, awareness camp and discussions. A release from the ashram said that it had formed about 480 women self-help groups with 6,300 members in two blocks in the district. The total savings of these members was Rs. 1 crore and they had received revolving fund and loan assistance to the tune of Rs. 85 lakh from banks. About 350 members participated in the Mahalir Mela. Marabin Mainthan Muthiah, Editor of Namathu Nambikkai, urged the members to face challenges boldly and this would help in their economic and social growth. President of the ashram, Minoti Aram, said that social empowerment could be achieved only if these women educated their children.
The Working Women's Coordination committee affiliated to the CITU, All India Democratic Women's Association and Women Self-Help Group Federation organised a protest here on Thursday. Their demands include control of prices, protection of welfare of workers in the unorganised sectors and 33 per cent reservation for women.
