Udhagamandalam: A sum of Rs. 12.67 crore has been sanctioned for implementing an Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme here, according to the Commissioner, Udhagamandalam Municipality, Seeni Ajmal Khan.

He told The Hindu here recently that the programme was part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Such a scheme was being implemented for the first time in this district.

Pointing out that there are 36 slums in the hill station, he said that the Slum Clearance Board and the Urban Local Body have notified 16.

Among them are Indira colony, Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, Karunanidhi colony, Kasturibai colony, Periyaandavarpuram, Manjanakorai colony, Nondimedu, Tumbler Muduku and Elkhill.

A major component of the programme was demolition and reconstruction of the houses. While each unit would cost Rs. 80,000 the beneficiaries would have to bear ten per cent of the cost.

The balance would be borne by the Central and State Governments. The built up area of each unit would be 25 sq. m.

It was proposed to put up 1,269 units. While 50 houses would be upgraded the rest would be new.

Basic amenities such as water supply, storm water drains, footpaths, retaining walls, street lights, community halls and underground sewerage systems would be provided. Mr. Khan said that work was expected commence within a month and completed in a year's time.
