SINGAPORE: The normalisation talks between Japan and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) ended in Hanoi on Thursday, with the two blaming each other for their failure to make progress. They did not also set a date for further talks under the overall framework of the six-party accord on the Korean peninsula denuclearisation. The Japan-DPRK talks in Hanoitook place under the format of a working group that was set up by the six parties China, the U.S., the two Koreas, Japan and Russia. Japan's chief negotiator Koichi Haraguchi later said the positions of the two sides "are far apart." North Korean negotiator Song Il-ho said "a big gap" still existed between the two sides.
