THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has made all arrangements for conducting the SSLC examination in a transparent manner, Minister for Law and Sports M. Vijayakumar has said. Replying to questions in the Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Vijayakumar, who was deputising for Education Minister M.A. Baby, said an expert committee appointed by the Government to look into the lapses in conducting the examination had submitted a report and it had been approved by the High Court. The question papers were printed in a press certified by the Reserve Bank of India. They would be transported to the education district headquarters with police protection in sealed vehicles. In the previous years, 50 question papers were kept in each cover. From this year, it was limited to 16. The District Education Officers would monitor the distribution of question papers to the examination centres. The covers would be opened only in the presence of a student. The answer scripts would be despatched to the valuation camps the same day.
Sports lottery
Mr. Vijayakumar said there was no change in the prize structure of the sports lottery conducted by the Government. Though it was aimed at collecting Rs.200 crore, tickets were sold only for Rs.29.44 crore. A sum of Rs.3.24 crore was spent for advertisement. After meeting all commitments, the Government would be getting around Rs.14.5 crore for sports development. He said a case was pending against the lottery in the High Court and the Government had filed an affidavit. Celebrities of cinema and sports had not taken any remuneration for appear in the advertisements for the lottery. The projects for utilising the fund would be finalised in consultation with all concerned.
Railway projects
Land for railway development projects would be acquired soon. The Government had submitted memoranda to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad to allocate more trains for the State, he said.
Cricket stadium
A proposal of the Cricket Association to set up a cricket stadium in the capital was pending before the Government. The association would bear the expenses for the stadium if the Government provided the land. The Minister said the Government was examining the proposal of an expert committee to set up a technical university.
Tsunami relief
Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said that 4,035 houses were sanctioned under the tsunami relief project and 3,759 houses had been completed. A comprehensive housing scheme for Rs.300 crore was being considered. As many as 4,438 instances of reclamation of backwaters had been detected.
