Students taken ill after breakfast

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: Scores of children from a number of government schools in Yanam region were treated in Government hospital on Wednesday as soon as they were brought with complaints of nausea after taking breakfast supplied at their schools (bread and milk).

A Health Department source in Yanam told The Hindu on Thursday that nearly 1,500 children were treated by a team of doctors in the Government hospital. The hospital authorities detained around 150 children for observation until Wednesday evening, while the remaining children were discharged after treatment. All of them were out of danger. The source said that one girl student, who was discharged earlier in the day, however, was brought back with a complaint of diarrhea later. She was given intensive treatment now. She was out of danger. All India Congress Committee Secretary Sudhakar Reddy said on Thursday that as soon as he had information on Wednesday while in Hyderabad, he rushed to Yanam to visit the children taking treatment in the hospital. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, along with officials of the Department of Education, will arrive at Yanam for an enquiry on Friday.
