Puducherry: Health and Labour Minister E. Valsaraj said here on Thursday that the Government would shortly issue an order to implement the monthly assistance scheme to the unemployed graduates and non- graduates in the Union Territory. Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of the National Safety Week at the Labour Department here, he said that while the graduates would get Rs.1,000 a month, non-graduates would receive Rs. 500. The beneficiaries should have their names live in the Employment Exchange register for last five years preceding the date of application. The parents of the candidates should have been residents here for a minimum of 15 years. The relief would be available for a maximum period of three years or till the beneficiary gets a job. It was estimated that around 30,000 youth would benefit by the scheme and of them 10,000 candidates were graduates. Mr. Valsaraj said that the Health Department had issued an order raising the age of superannuation of a specialist doctor working in Government hospitals from 60 years to 62 years. This was in keeping with the decision of the Union Health Ministry. He said that the specialists should not be administrative staff.
Competitions
The Minister earlier distributed prizes and certificates to students of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and workers who won at various competitions held as part of the National Safety Week celebration. Labour Commissioner S.D. Sundaresan and Deputy Labour Commissioner P. Karunakaran also spoke.
