U.S. delegation calls on Buddhadeb

Staff Reporter

Kolkata: A 15-member U.S. business delegation met Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday, and invited him and State Industry Minister Nirupam Sen to visit the U.S. They later told reporters that the time had now come to forge new business ties with the State.

Ron Somers, president of the U.S.-India Business Council, said the delegation had looked at sectors like the proposed chemical hub, agro processing and aviation sector and felt that West Bengal's proximity to Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan gave it an advantage.

Mr. Sen said that the Chief Minister requested the delegation to explore possibility of exporting Indian mangoes to the U.S. and the team had shown interest in this. The team was also keen to explore investment opportunities in the State. Mr. Somers who at a business session organised by the CII on Wednesday had emphasised on the need to handle land acquisition matters sensitively said the involvement of a person like Ratan Tata in the State boosted investors' confidence.
