`Withdrawal of troops will give relief'

Staff Reporter

Jammu: People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said her demand for troops reduction in Jammu and Kashmir was part of a process to provide relief to the people and should not be linked to power politics.

She said troops reduction and revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) would have a discernible and instantaneous impact on the ground situation in the State.

Giving details of her recent meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other members of the United Progressive Alliance Government, Ms. Mehbooba said she was satisfied that she apprised them of party's view point on the issue. On the Prime Minister rejecting the demand for demilitarisation, the PDP president said demilitarisation was a wider concept as it also included the issue of troops withdrawal from Siachen.
