Women resent delay in quota bill passage

Staff Reporter

Stage novel protest against `raw deal'

`NO' TO CLIMBDOWN: AIWDA activists `petitioning' Ambedkar in Eluru on Thursday.

ELURU: The International Women's Day on Thursday saw a unique protest by members of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) in the city on the failure of the successive governments at the Centre in passage of the women reservation bill. Holding black flags, AIDWA activists came in procession to the B.R. Ambedkar's statue at old bus stand from their office and presented `him' a petition, seeking to come to the rescue of women and ensure due share for them.

Marriage law

Meanwhile, District Legal Services Authority secretary Y. Hemasunder, at a function held in connection with the International Women's Day, observed that the response from women on implementation of the Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act was not up to the satisfaction.

As several women were not inclined to get their marriages registered as per the Act, they were becoming victim of fake marriages, he added. Mr. Hemasunder called upon women to take initiative in getting the women-related laws implemented effectively so as to ensure justice to them in gender crimes. Women freedom fighters -- Gundu Lakshmi Narasamma and Anne Anasuya Devi -- were honoured.

Ms. Anasuya Devi expressed her strong displeasure over the delay in passage of women reservation bill. It was a classic case of gender injustice, she added.

District Collector Lav Agarwal spoke.
