Munich: Roy Makaay and Lucio scored on Wednesday to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid and send it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, prevailing in a clash of perennial European giants that featured a record-setting goal, expulsions and a late penalty.

The teams finished the two legs 4-4 on aggregate, but Bayern's two goals in Madrid — including a late strike by Mark van Bommel — put it into the last eight.

Needing a victory, Bayern started quickly when Hasan Salihamidzic stole Roberto Carlos' pass, ran down the right wing and crossed into the box where Makaay volleyed it past Iker Casillas after just 11 seconds.

Quickest goal

Makaay's goal 11 seconds into the match was the quickest goal scored in the Champions League, but that was not the end of the action, as the match threw up plenty of drama.

Bayern striker Lukas Podolski broke in alone on goal after a long through ball from Makaay, but Casillas thwarted the German World Cup hero as well as Makaay in the 27th minute and Daniel van Buyten 11 minutes later.

Real produced its first solid chance in the 43rd minute, but Jose Maria "Guti" Gutierrez shot wide.

Brazilian international Lucio doubled Bayern's lead in the 66th, nodding home a Willy Sagnol corner, and the goal was like a blow in the gut to Real.

Van Nistelrooy set up an interesting finish when he scored in the 83rd minute, converting a penalty after Lucio felled Robinho.

But before van Nistelrooy took his penalty, van Bommel and Diarra were sent off with their second yellow cards for arguing on the edge of the box.

Sergio Ramos scored what appeared to be an equaliser in the 90th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to a handball.

In London, PSV Eindhoven's Alex scored both goals in its 1-1 draw with Arsenal, first giving the English side hope and then giving his team a spot in the quarterfinals.

The defender tapped in an own-goal in the 58th minute to put the two teams even on aggregate in the second leg. But he then scored the deciding goal in the 83rd by heading in a free-kick, to leave the Gunners with no chance of any silverware this season.

Alex scored his team's goal off Edison Mendez's free-kick.

Earlier, Denilson sent in a corner and Emmanuel Adebayor jumped for the header, with PSV goalkeeper Gomes attempting to punch the ball away. But the ball sailed through untouched until Alex inadvertently tapped it into the empty net.

The results: Bayern Munich 2 (Makaay, Lucio) bt Real Madrid 1 (Van Nistelrooy-pen); Arsenal 1 (Alex-og) drew with PSV Eindhoven 1 (Alex); Manchester United 1 (Larsson) bt Lille 0; AC Milan 1 (Kaka) bt Celtic 0. — Agencies
