Administrative Reforms Committee

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government on Thursday constituted an Administrative Reforms Committee to recommend measures for introducing transparency in administration.

The committee is headed by retired High Court Judge A.K.Rajan. The other members are: Retired IAS officer V.Viswanathan; retired DGP S. Kumarasamy; retired Chief Conservator of Forests S. Shanmugasundaram; Alandur Municipal Chairman R.S. Bharathi; former director of Tamil Virtual University Ponnavaikko; former director of Medicine and Rural Health Services N. Kalyanasundaram; former Urban Development assistant director K.P. Subramanian; retired director of School Education A. Muthukrishnan; retired District Revenue Officer R. Pannerselvam and Ambujam Dorai, wife of former DGP P. Dorai.

Director (Tamil cell) of Law Department V. Chandran is the member secretary of the committee, according to an official press release. — Special Correspondent

Minister lauds CPCL

CHENNAI: Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora complimented the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited for its water management initiatives, especially sewage water reclamation and de-salination project.

A press release on the visit of Mr. Deora to the CPCL corporate office here on Wednesday said the Union Minister reviewed the performance of the company.

He also released `Petro Sage Continues... Story of CPCL,' the in-house publication of the Indian Oil Corporation group company.

At the meeting, attended by IOC Chairman S. Behuria and CPCL managing director K.K. Acharya, the company made a presentation on its plans to invest Rs.5,400 crore on various project at its refinery in Manali, including one for quality upgradation of petrol and diesel to Euro IV standards. — Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Results of the D.M. and M.Ch specialities examinations conducted by the Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R Medical University during February 2007 are available online at www.tnmmu.ac.in, a press release here said. Third phase of land distribution

CHENNAI: Third phase of distribution of land to landless poor by the State Government will be inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at Chennavaram village in Tiruvannamalai district on March 17. In this phase 25,000 acres of land will be distributed.

In the first two phases, the Government distributed 50,077 acres of land to 50,189 landless agricultural workers in the State.

The Chief Minister will also initiate the second phase of distribution of free stoves with LPG connection to the poor. About 2.65 lakh families would be benefited in this phase. On the same day, Union and State Ministers will distribute free gas connection to the poor in other districts.

According to an official press release, in the first phase 34,500 families were given free stoves with LPG connection. — Special Correspondent

DVDs seized

Tuticorin: The police seized 20 pirated Digital Versatile Discs from two persons at Kovilpatti on Wednesday.

Sources said that Ayyappan (27) and Palpandian (29), both natives of Madurai, were caught by a special team led by Inspector Murugesan of Kovilpatti West Police Station. They were trying to sell DVDs at a bus stand.

Both were remanded to the judicial custody.

Demonstration

TIRUNELVELI: Urging the State and Central Governments to fill-up all vacancies in one stroke, cadres belonging to the Puthiya Thamizhagam staged demonstration in front of Tirunelveli Railway Junction here on Thursday.

Led by the party president, K. Krishnasamy, the cadres said that the governments should fill-up the vacancies meant for the Dalits. - Staff Reporter

Man kills father over property dispute

ERODE: A man murdered his father due to property dispute.

According to the police, Periyannan (65), a widower, was living with his son, Subramaniam (40) at Devagiammapuram near Kodumudi. It is stated that Subramaniam pressurised his father to grant him all the properties leaving none to his sisters. On Wednesday night, Subramaniam after sending his family members to some other village, beat his father with sticks and strangulated him killing Periyannan on the spot. On information, the Kodumudi police arrested Subramaniam and seized the body. Further investigation is on.registered murder case against Subramaniam and investigating.

Chains snatched

ERODE: Jewellery weighing more than 10 sovereigns were snatched from women during the temple festival at Bhavani.

A large number of women had gathered to participate in the procession in connection with the

Chellandiamman festival. Taking advantage of the situation, some unscrupulous elements snatched the chains of the devotees.

Police are investigating into the incident.

Suba Ilavarasan acquitted

ARIYALUR: The Fast Track Court Judge, S. Kalavathi, on Wednesday acquitted the leader of the banned Tamil Nadu Liberation Army Suba Ilavarasan and 15 others in a murder case. The Kuvagam police arrested Suba Ilavarasan and 16 others for allegedly murdering another TNLA leader Kuvagam Ramasami in 1997. The first accused in the case, Arivazhagan, a TNLA cadre, was done to death in December 2004 in the internecine clashes in the organisation. The Judge, who heard the case, acquitted all the accused on the grounds that the charges against them were not proved beyond doubt. Suba Ilavararasn, who has been detained under a few other cases, was later taken to the prison in Puzhal in Chennai.

Woman held for forgery in passport

Tiruchi: The immigration sleuths caught a 38-year old woman passenger at the airport here on Thursday after they found the Emigration Check Not Required (ECNR) endorsement seal in her passport to be a forged one.

Airport sources here said Shanthi, hailing from Ramanathapuram district, who had studied up to Fifth Standard, left for Muscat via Chennai in 2004 where she worked as a housemaid. When she returned by a Sri Lankan flight to Tiruchi on Thursday, the immigration sleuths who checked her passport detected the crime. The woman was later handed over to the Airport Police.

Sexagenarian murdered

TIRUCHI: Ibrahim (65), a betel leaves-seller, was murdered in his house at Vazhavandankottai near Thuvakudi in the outskirts of the city on Thursday. Police said Ibrahim had an illicit relationship with a woman near his house, which was not liked by her sister and brother Charles. There was a feud between Ibrahim and Charles over money transactions, which led to a quarrel between the two. Charles, the police said, attacked Ibrahim with an aruval killing him and escaped.

Computer training

NAGAPATTINAM: Nearly 65 schoolchildren belonging to fishermen community studying in the tsunami-hit coastal hamlets of Serudur and Akkaraipettai in Nagapattinam district, are getting computer training at two centres, thanks to the initiative of People's Development Association (PDA), a Madurai-based NGO. This is part of the PDA's skill development and training programme. The children are given training after school hours in word, paint, clipart, etc. They are also taught to play games and listen to music.

The two centres here have been provided qualified teachers.
