Steps on to disburse money to RBF depositors

    CHENNAI: Steps are being taken along with the Official Liquidator (OL) to disburse the sixth instalment shortly to Royapettah Benefit Fund Ltd (RBF) depositors, according to the Economic Offences Wing of the State police.

    Additional Director-General of Police, EOW, Archana Ramasundaram, at a meeting with the depositors on Wednesday, explained the efforts made by the police to bring those who had defrauded them to book, in coordination with other agencies.

    The RBF had defaulted in payment of Rs. 454 crore to 1.92 lakh depositors during 1999. The amount settled so far was Rs. 133.37 crore at 25 per cent. In all, 58,653 depositors got their full amount (for deposits up to Rs. 5,000). The last refund was made in January 2006. The remaining amount to be settled was Rs. 320.62 crore involving 1,33,347 depositors. A sum of Rs. 9.5 crore was available with the OL for the next disbursement.

    Properties attached

    Efforts taken by the special unit included interim attachment of 205 properties. Identification of personal properties was in progress. There was follow-up action against mega borrowers, three of whom had been arrested. Collection of money from borrowers was being expedited.

    Liaison with the OL for the sale of company properties was in progress.

    Ms. Ramasundaram heard specific grievances and assured the depositors that appropriate action would be taken, wherever possible.
