Organisations stage protest in Bijapur

Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR: Members of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) and non-governmental organisations protested here on Thursday against the alleged attack in Bangalore on Wednesday on journalists of a private TV news channel.

The agitators, led by president of the district unit of the KUWJ Mohan Kulkarni, staged a demonstration at Gandhi Chowk. Activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) led by its district unit head Sheshrao Mane joined the group there and burnt an effigy of Champakadhama Swamy, who had allegedly led the attack on the journalists. They also formed a human chain at the chowk, causing a disruption to the movement of vehicles.

The protesters then marched on to the Deputy Commissioner's office, where they staged a demonstration demanding that adequate security be provided to journalists. Mr. Kulkarni as well as leaders of different organisations, including G.C. Bayyareddy, Bhimsi Kaladagi, Gopal Naik, Raju Gachchinmath, Hashimpeer Walikar, Mallamma Yalwar, Ramesh Bidnur, Shankar Kumbar, Javed Jamadar, Akram Mashalkar and Barthi Patil, expressed concern over the increasing incidents of assault on mediapersons, who, they said, were playing an important role in strengthening democracy. They condemned the tendency by some people to take law into their own hands, and said that those who were hurt by media reports could always seek legal recourse. Stern action must be initiated against all those found responsible for such incidents, they said.
