Kumaraswamy for Chitradurga, Hassan

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will visit Chitradurga and Hassan districts on Friday.

According to a release from the Chief Minister's secretariat, Mr. Kumaraswamy will leave Bangalore at 8 a.m. on Friday by helicopter to Challakere in Chitradurga district where he would attend a mass marriage programme.

Later, he would lay foundation stone for the proposed garment factory of Go Go International in Hassan. He would also lay the foundation stone for development programmes in Arsikere. He would return to Bangalore in the evening. — Special Correspondent

No Janata Darshan tomorrow

BANGALORE: There will be no Janata Darshan programme of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on March 10. According to an official release, the programme has been cancelled as it happens to be a holiday on account of second Saturday. — Special Correspondent

Urban local body elections by May-end

BANGALORE: The Government has decided to hold elections to 209 urban local bodies in the State by May-end, Minister for Municipal Administration R. Srinivas said here on Thursday.

He told presspersons that the Government would submit a reservation list of wards to the Karnataka High Court on March 20. The court had directed the Government to submit the list by March 22.

The State Election Commission has filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking a direction to the Government to complete the process of election to 209 urban bodies and hand over it a notification in this regard. — Special Correspondent

Workshop on disaster management

BANGALORE: A workshop-cum-training on disaster management for deputy commissioners and superintendents of police began on Thursday at the R.A. Mundkur Fire and Emergency Services Academy here.

The two-day programme was inaugurated by Ajai Kumar Singh, DGP and Commandant General of Home Guards and Director of Civil Defence, Fire and Emergency Services.

The training module has been designed for imparting skills and knowledge to specific groups targeting officers engaged in disaster response to management. — Staff Reporter

DSS study camp

BANGALORE: To provide an intellectual perspective for the Dalit struggle, the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (KRDSS) will hold a three-day State-level study camp for its office-bearers from March 10 in Belgaum.

KRDSS State convener Lakshminarayana Nagawara told presspersons in Bangalore on Thursday that the main intention of organising the camp was to rekindle the spirit of rationalism among the Dalits so that they would be able to face the problems that were emerging because of globalisation and liberalisation. — Special Correspondent

Concerts

BANGALORE: Premaanjali Education Trust will bring five eminent Hindustani classical performers on stage here on April 7.

The trust office-bearers told presspersons here on Thursday that it will present three concerts at Koramangala Indoor Stadium by vocalists Pandit Rajan and Sajan Misra; Saxophone and flute jugalbandi by Kadri Gopalnath and Ronu Majumdar; and tabla solo by Rimpa Siva. The trust runs a centre for the blind and a home for the homeless children and supports day care centres for children of quarry workers. — Staff Reporter

Felicitation

MYSORE: The Mysore branch of Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu (Hind) will felicitate writer Tilak Raj Seth `Talab', member of the Karnataka Urdu Academy, on March 11 at Darul Uloom Saheel Ur Rashad Arabic College, Bangalore, at 7 p.m., according to a press release. MYSORE: The University Computer Centre, in association with ECIT (An ISO 9001 certified training division of ECIL, Hyderabad), will offer short-term courses for employees, housewives and engineering students. E-Craft, C-Programming, OOPs and C++, visual basics, oracle 8i and Java programming will taught. Twenty per cent concession on course fee will be given to candidates from the SC/ST category or children of the employees of Mysore university. All courses will commence on March 12. MYSORE: Inner Wheel Club of K.R. Nagar will organise a free infertility check-up camp at Mamatha Ganga Maternity Home and Infertility Research Centre, Bazaar Road, K.R. Students protest

BIJAPUR: Tension prevailed at Government Polytechnic College here on Thursday after some persons tried to manhandle the college principal, Govind Raju, over a land dispute. Students boycotted classes and demanded that the attackers be arrested.

The trouble began when some masonry workers hired by Inamdar, a local, tried to lay the foundation for a house on a piece of land that was under dispute. Mr. Raju asked them to stop the work. Mr. Inamdar and some of his family members allegedly used foul language against the principal and threatened him. They also reportedly tried to manhandle him. Students came to the principal's rescue by agitating and forcing the work to stop. A case has been registered.

Drama festival

Madikeri: The Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy will organise a Kodava Drama Festival in April, a press release from the academy said here on Thursday. The drama should not exceed 80 minutes and selected troupes will be eligible for honorariaum of Rs. 5,000, apart from other expenditure, memento and certificates, registrar of the academy Tara Saraswati said. Attack condemned

SHIMOGA: The district unit of the Karnataka Working Journalists' Association presented a memorandum to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy through the district administration here on Thursday condemning the reported attack of a television channel's office in Bangalore on Wednesday. It said it was unfortunate incidents of targeting the media had increased and this was a threat to the freedom of the Press. It urged the Government to ensure proper protection to media persons. — Special Correspondent
