Bangalore: The State Government on Thursday was asked by the Parliamentary Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to expedite the disposal of cases of caste atrocities. The low conviction rate in the State and the many pending cases of atrocity on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have been highlighted in a 80-page study report by the committee that was tabled in the Lok Sabha. "I am happy that the parliamentary committee has finally come down on the Government on the issue of caste atrocity. This should be an eye-opener to act strongly on the matter," said Ravivarma Kumar, well-known advocate. He said that a separate legal cell should be set up by the Government to handle all matters related to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and backward castes.
Vacancies
The committee had also asked that the nearly 18,000 vacancies in Karnataka for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes be filled at the earliest, including the posts of professor, lecturer, reader and teacher. The high rate of school dropout among children of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities was also brought to the fore by the parliamentary committee, which has asked the Government to conduct a survey and take up necessary steps to check the trend.
