HASSAN: Inaugurating the International Women's Day celebrations and an interactive session on HIV/AIDS at A.V.K Women's College in Hassan on Thursday, programme director of AIR S. Ushalatha regretted that exploitation of women continued despite their education. Empowerment of women did not mean getting them married early but ensuring that they got an education. . The programme was organised by Swamy Vivekananda Youth Movement in association with A.V.K. Women's College.
Victims
Ms. Ushalatha said in earlier days women were exploited owing to their innocence, illiteracy and belief in superstitions. Now despite being educated and being actively involved in all walks of life, they were still victims of exploitation. Education, employment and other aspects of a woman's life were focussed on getting her married. Unfortunately, woman had become a marriage commodity. There was no need for women to compete with men under the garb of equality, and there should be no special status for women, she said. If she was treated equally it was enough, she said. Ms. Ushalatha, who also inaugurated the interactive session on HIV/AIDS, regretted that voluntary and social organisations had not taken the creation of awareness on HIV/AIDS as a national programme but were interested only in getting funds. It had just become a ritual. The awareness programme was not reaching rural areas. Vice-principal of A.V.K. College Shailaja Kumari presided. Planning director of Swamy Vivekananda Youth Movement Sudhir B. Bangalore, professor of HIMS Mamatha Sudhir, managing director of Vivekananda Youth Movement R. Vijaya Kumar and NSS officer of A.V.K. College professor T.S. Nirmala spoke.
