MYSORE: The Mysore City Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested six persons at N.R. Mohalla on Wednesday and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs. 6 lakh from them. The police gave the names of the arrested as Tabrij Ali (23) alias Tabriz, Hussain Ali (20) alias Hussain, Abdul Khadar (30), Basha (58) alias Pasha, Naushad Ali (28) alias Naushid and Mosin Khan Irani (23). Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Police Commissioner Praveen Sood said the accused hailed from Hosallikoppalu village of Holenarasipur taluk in Hassan district. Eight cases registered in police stations here had been solved with their arrest. Mr. Sood said the accused mainly targeted lonely women in public places and robbed them of their jewellery. They had robbed Surya of a gold chain, a wristwatch and some cash at the Suburb Bus-stand here on Wednesday. Acting on a complaint from the victim, the police swung into action and arrested the accused within hours of robbery, at A.J. Block in N.R. Mohalla. The accused used to dupe gullible and elderly women posing themselves as policemen in plainclothes. They persuaded women to remove their ornaments stating that robbers might attack them any moment and a chain-snatching incident had happened just now. They used to pack the ornaments in a piece of cloth and return them to the unsuspecting women. But on reaching home, the women found stones packed instead of their ornaments. "This was their modus operandi," the Police Commissioner said. He announced a cash award of Rs. 10,000 to the CCB team that arrested the accused.
Records
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K.T. Balakrishna said that a decision had been taken to remove the names of anti-social elements who were reformed, aged or dead from the rowdy-sheeter records. The police had been observing the rowdy-sheeters for the past six months. They were summoned recently to update records. "We have spoken to their family members and relatives to find out whether they have reformed. The names of 1,000 rowdy-sheeters are in the records of 16 police stations in the city," he said, and added that the process of updating records was in the final stage. Mr. Balakrishna said the observation helped the police to arrest eight anti-social elements of Bangalore here recently. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Rajendra Prasad spoke.
