Fair deal still a far cry, laments Telugu Mahila

`Even top-ranking women officials not exempted from abuse'

VIZIANAGARAM : Though women have excelled in employment, politics and other fields, they are still subjected to harassment, Sobha Hymavathi, Telugu Mahila district president and former MLA said at a press conference on Thursday.

Ms. Hymavathi said the legislations enacted for the benefit of women must be enforced strictly else even top-ranking women officials were not exempted from abuse. They were unable to fight boldly as they lacked awareness on various legislations, she said.

Increased burden

Criticising the State government for going back on its poll-eve promise of providing Rs. 100 subsidy on each LPG connection and loans to SHGs at 25 paise interest, the former MLA said women were burdened by increasing LPG price. She asked the UPA Government to pass the Women's Bill in Parliament. Former municipal chairperson and Telugu Mahila State organising secretary P. Kanakamahalakshmi said it was the TDP that adopted the 33 per cent reservation for women in local bodies and distributed over 60 lakh LPG connections under Deepam scheme to DWCRA groups. Muddada Ramani, 31st ward councillor and advocate was present.

`Utilise schemes'

Srikakulam: The need for empowerment of women in social, economic and political fields was stressed by speakers at meetings at the Bapuji Kalamandir and Training and Technical Development Centre, Etcherla, on Thursday.

The meetings, got up to mark Women's Day, were attended, among others, by district Collector V. Nagendra Vishnu and municipal chairperson M.V.Padmavathi.

Ms.Padmavathi said that as many as 42 municipalities were being headed by women in the State, a fact that reflected women's empowerment in politics. She also wanted women to take advantage of the schemes formulated by various agencies and become economically empowered. Meanwhile, organisations like the CPI(M), CITU and others held rallies to mark the day. They carried placards highlighting various issues concerning women.

Equal rights

Kakinada: The Joint Collector C. Sudarsan Reddy has advised the womenfolk to strive for their all round progress by availing the equal rights achieved through prolonged struggles all these years.

Participating as the chief guest at a function held here on Thursday to mark the International Women's Day celebrations, he said officials, people's representatives and voluntary organisations should play a vital role in effective implementation of the acts aimed at women's welfare.
