BHUBANESWAR: The government will set up an institute to upgrade skills of women self-help groups (SHGs). Addressing a State-level function to mark the International Women's Day on Thursday evening, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said women SHGs were vital economic forces in the rural pockets and a State-level institute would be established so that their skill could be enhanced.

He reiterated that every district would have one federation of SHGs to achieve coordination. Mr. Patnaik also highlighted success of his pet project - `Mission Shakti - saying about 37 lakh women were empowered under the project. A special appreciation came from the Chief Minister for a SHG working in Naryanpatna block under Koraput district where women were supplying drinking water by using solar energy. Women and Child Development Minister Pramilla Mallick and Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy attended. Earlier, an orientation programme was organised by the State Textile and Handloom Department at Jaydev Bhavan for weavers on the occasion of International Women's Day and Entrepreneurs' Week being currently observed. The event was aimed at providing technical inputs on export orientation and market interface to weavers with special emphasis on women.
