`Encourage girls to pursue higher education'

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: It is unfortunate that women are not allowed to enter some temples in our country even today, Sushma Janardhan, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat president, said after inaugurating the International Women's Day celebrations here on Thursday.

Concepts such as purity had been traditionally used to deny women their rights. It was time to discard such notions, she said. Although women in our country had scaled great heights in several fields, problems such as female foeticide and dowry still plagued our society, Ms. Janardhan said, adding education was essential to overcome them.

Ms. Janardhan urged parents to encourage girl students to pursue higher education. Do not discourage girls from pursuing courses of their choice, she added.

Awards

Anganwadi workers D.G. Pushpavathi from Sullia taluk and Shirley from Belthangady taluk were felicitated. The Keladi Chennamma and Hoysala awards were presented to Ashwini Rai and Rohan Veigas, respectively.

Ashwini Rai, a seventh standard student, won the award for helping people catch a thief who snatched her mother's chain. Rohan Veigas won the bravery award for saving a boy from drowning.

Mayor Vijaya Arun presided over the function. Rajashree S. Hegde, vice-president of the zilla panchayat, was present.
