CHENNAI : The launch of a silk sari variety `Mupbhagam' by the Handlooms and Textiles Department on Thursday served twin purpose to commemorate International Women's Day and also revive the long-forgotten design. Launched at the Loom World showroom at Anna Nagar by danseuse Chitra Visweswaran, the sari was designed in a such way that it was divided in three parts. While the borders shared the same colour, the middle portion was designed of another colour. The price of the sari ranged between Rs.4,000 and Rs.5,000. According to officials, the design developed during the reign of King Achuthappa of Vijayanagar has now been revived by Kancheepuram Arignar Anna Silk Weavers Co-operative Society. The design earned the Master Craftsmen Weaver National Award in 2004 for adopting the old method of silk weaving. Besides the usual discount, a special discount of two per cent on silk and five per cent on cotton materials would be offered till March 14 at the Loom World showrooms on Anna Salai and Egmore to mark International Women's Day.
