CHENNAI : Actor Suriya was not the only celebrity at the World Kidney Day celebrations hosted by Tamilnad Kidney Research (Tanker) Foundation and Duchess Club on Thursday. Two young girls shared his celebrity status with their impressive gesture of donating paintings in aid of kidney-affected patients. Thirteen-year-old Anjali Chandrasekar and 10-year-old Gayathri Neelakantan gave away their paintings to be auctioned towards the cause of needy patients. The girls were honoured by Mr. Suriya for their goodwill with a memento undersigned by him. To everyone's surprise, Suriya, goodwill ambassador of the foundation, started the auction by buying a painting of Anjali for Rs.1 lakh. Suriya also accepted a cheque for Rs.20,000 from Neena Reddy, president of Duchess Club, towards the Tanker Foundation. In a lighter vein, Suriya read out a humorous message from his wife Jyothika to greet everyone on the occasion of International Women's Day, evoking ripples of laughter among the audience. Lauding the efforts of Tanker Foundation, he said the organisation had made a lot of difference in lives of kidney-affected persons. Latha Kumaraswami, managing trustee of the Foundation, said that the foundation reached out to needy patients through three dialysis units, including the one in Madurai. She appreciated Suriya for supporting the Madurai dialysis unit and the upcoming Coimbatore unit. The foundation also organised awareness programme at Spencer Plaza. A team of doctors from Nephrology Department of Kilpauk Medical College screened residents of Thillaiadi Valliyamai Nagar at Anna Nagar for kidney problems to mark World Kidney Day. Headed by V. Chiranjeevi of the Nephrology Department, the free camp comprising blood test and ultra sonogram screened people aged above 16. Those detected with renal disease symptoms were referred to the hospital. Doctors also educated the residents on kidney disease symptoms and prevention methods.
