GUNTUR: The development of a country hinges on the progress made by its woman population, Zilla Parishad Chairperson K. Vijaya said. Addressing a slew of meetings organised by various departments on the occasion of World Women's Day here on Thursday, she hailed the contribution of women from various walks of life in the development of the country. The facts that dropout rate among girls was still high was a cause for concern and called for a concerted action plan to enroll them back into the schools.
Innovative methods
Regional Joint Director of School Education Venkateswara Sharma, SSA additional project director Sri Rammoorthy and Bhavan's principal Seetha were present. At the Department of Agriculture, she exhorted women to adapt innovative methods in marketing of food products.
Flag hoisted
The ZP Chairperson hoisted a flag designed by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Department and Ministry of Human Resource Development at the Zilla Parishad office. Draped in colours of a rainbow, the flag symbolised the multi-faceted personality of women, project director A. Rama Devi said. Later, tri-cycles were distributed to 30 physically challenged women. Women's Day was celebrated at the South Central Railway Sangh office here. Divisional Railway Manager C.S. Chauhan said that all steps were being taken to ensure the safety of women passengers on the railway station premises. Close-circuit televisions would be set up shortly, high-mast lighting installed and an all-women RPF battalion deployed, he added.
