BCCI's offer on encrypting of DD signals
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday offered to bear the cost of encrypting the Doordarshan signals in a desperate bid to end the tussle between Prasar Bharati and private broadcaster Nimbus, which holds the right to telecast all matches in the country for the next four years.
At a meeting here, the Board made an offer to encrypt all the 1,400 Doordarshan transmitters. BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi said: "We will bear the entire cost and it should not take us more than 15 days for the work to be completed. It will be good for not just cricket but other disciplines too."
The Board meeting follows a demand by Nimbus that it was losing substantial revenue because of distribution of unencrypted signals from Doordarshan to countries in the neighbourhood and in the Gulf.
The Board expects the issue to be resolved soon and indicated that Nimbus too had no objections once the signals were encrypted. Its proposal would be put forward to the Government for approval.
