HYDERABAD: Chief Executive Officer of Matrix Laboratories N. Prasad has become the highest individual taxpayer in the Andhra Pradesh region of Income-Tax Department by paying Rs. 26.40 crores. Mr. Prasad had paid Rs. 2.70 crores towards tax last year. "He (Mr. Prasad) had issued an advance cheque dated March 14 towards the payment," Chief Commissioner of I-T, Andhra Pradesh region, D.V. Dharmik said at a press conference here on Thursday. Mr. Prasad also topped the list of taxpayers in the Hindu undivided family (HUF) category with Rs. 2.05 crores. The NMDC was the highest taxpayer with Rs. 1,200 crores as against Rs. 884 crores paid last year among PSUs. Collections for the region till February-end shot up to Rs. 7,301 crores as against Rs. 4,900 crores up to February last, registering an increase of 49 per cent. Another interesting fact revealed by Mr. Dharmik was that undisclosed income of Rs. 191 crores was detected in 78 surveys on real estate agents. Similar surveys on contractors led to detection of Rs. 103 crores. In all, 803 surveys, including 451 surveys on TDS, were conducted up to February on builders, real estate agents, jewellers, contractors, traders, professionals and finance business, which resulted in detection of additional income of Rs. 282 crores.
Stars filing returns
He said no surveys were conducted on individuals or firms owned by film personalities. Film stars were filing returns either in Chennai or Mumbai, he said and added that there was an increase in returns. The department would be launching criminal prosecution proceedings in 15 cases against tax defaulters, he warned. There was an increase of 36 per cent in corporate tax collection and 65 per cent in personal I-T collections during the same period.
