`Austria, Kerala can join hands for growth'

Convention of Kerala Management Association inaugurated

KOCHI: Austria and Kerala can join forces in the tourism sector and share knowledge in the field for growth, said Jutta Stefan-Bastl, European Union country's Ambassador for South Asia here.

She was inaugurating the 26th annual management convention of the Kerala Management Association here on Thursday.

The Ambassador said that Kerala had its strengths especially in Ayurveda and that tourism was being promoted strongly by the State Government. Austria received 24 million tourists last year as it continued to be one of world's top tourism draws.

The Ambassador said that Kerala was observing a hartal on Thursday and referred to the State's reputation of having strong trade unions. She said that she looked forward to the growth of Kerala since there was a new spirit of enterprise here as outlined by the Kerala Management Association.

Austria was ready to share know-how and technology with suitable entrepreneurs in India as she pointed out that her country wanted to join India in its new flight of growth.

Austria had expertise in machinery making and was interested in renewable sources of energy and hydropower.

She said she would inaugurate a 50:50 joint venture between a Kochi-based company and an Austrian one for making food ingredients on Friday.

A.K. Nair, chairman of the convention committee, welcomed the gathering.

Sunil K. Zachariah, president of the Kerala Management Association, delivered the presidential address.

Subir Raha, president, All India Management Association, was the chief guest and Suhas Gopinath, chief executive officer and president, Globals Inc., was the special guest.

Faiz-Ur-Rahman, president of the Institute of Management, Sri Lanka, and M.A. Salim, president of the Qatar Management Association, offered felicitation.
