Auto drivers stage protest at Rajajinagar
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
Members of Autorickshaw Drivers' Union (ARDU), Bangalore West Zonal Committee, staged a demonstration in front of the Regional Transport Office, at Rajajinagar on Thursday protesting against corruption and registration of autorickshaws as "cabs" without permits.
Union working president H.G. Srinivasa Murthy, general secretary G.V. Raghavendra, organising secretary C.N. Srinivas and treasurer M.R. Ramakrishna led over 100 drivers during the protest and submitted a memorandum to the Regional Transport Officer C.T. Murthy listing their demands. The union said the Transport Department had been registering autorickshaws as "cabs" (public carriers) without there being any permit authorising the vehicle to be used as cab. This move had affected thousands of genuine autorickshaw drivers, the union said and urged the department to immediately seize autorickshaws plying without permits.
It demanded that no new permits be issued till the Bruhat Bangalore was finalised while demanding an inquiry by the Corps of Detectives regarding "bogus" permits. The union urged the department to register autorickshaws with four-stroke engines.
