BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday adjourned a case in which the State has sought confirmation of a death sentence passed by a Bangalore court on psychopathic killer Umesh Reddy. Though Reddy was sentenced to death on October 27, 2006, by the VII Fast Track Court, Bangalore, for raping and murdering Jayashree (37) in Peenya Police Station limits on February 28, 1998, there are several rape and murder cases against him. During the trial, Reddy had pleaded for his release, saying he had spent 13 years in prison and that he was willing to lead a civilised life. He said he was pursuing a graduation course and was learning computers. He said his father has passed away and mother was ill. The Fast Track Court had based its verdict on the evidence of Jayashree's eight-year-old son. During his incarceration, he had escaped five times from police custody. State Public Prosecutor S. Dore Raju has sought confirmation of the death sentence. A Division Bench comprising Justice N.S. Veerabhadraiah and Justice Jawad Rahim had been hearing both the reference by a lower court and appeal by Reddy against the death sentence. When the matter came up today, the Bench released the matter, which is now expected to come up before Justice Sridhar Rao and Justice Kumaraswamy.
