CHENNAI: A public interest litigation petition, seeking a direction to the authorities concerned to pass orders prohibiting plying of electric bikes and battery-operated two-wheelers in Tamil Nadu, unless they obtained approval, has been filed in the Madras High Court. It also sought a clear-cut policy for approving or granting licence to such vehicles The First Bench of Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru, before which the case filed by K. Rajeshwaran came up for admission, directed the Government Pleader to get instructions from the Government. It posted the matter to April 9. The petitioner, citing provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, submitted that at least five models of electric and battery-operated two-wheelers were flooding the State market though they operated with more than the mandatory .25 KW power. There was no approval or registration for these vehicles. It would cause great hardship to the general public. In case of accidents, they would not be able to claim insurance benefits. The exchequer too would suffer losses due to lack of insurance coverage. It would be difficult to track down owner of these vehicles involved in accidents. The petitioner said despite repeated representations to the authorities nothing had been done.
