J.K.Mittal appointed CARA Chairperson

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Social worker J.K. Mittal has been appointed Chairperson of the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. CARA functions as the central authority on the inter-country adoption of children.

Immediately after taking over charge, Mr. Mittal reviewed the emerging issues on the protection and welfare of children with regard to adoption.

In view of some unfortunate incidents in the recent past, he said the protection and welfare of children had become important.

Mr. Mittal asked the officials to prepare a database of abandoned or relinquished children, who could be put up for adoption in the country or abroad. He also asked them to review the guidelines for inter-country adoption to ensure all safety measures and well being of children.

The officials were directed to draw up training programmes for sensitising non-governmental organisations, officials, medical professionals and the judiciary on adoption.
