This Day That Age
The Communist Party is leading with 23 seats against 19 of the Congress, out of a total of 52 in the Kerala State Assembly for which results have been declared so far. Of the results for 13 seats announced on March 9, eight were annexed by the Communist Party and five by the Congress. The Congress, however, had a resounding victory at Quilon where a former Minister, Mr. A.A. Rahim, defeated his Revolutionary Socialist Party and Communist rivals. Among the Communist members returned were Mr. T.V. Thomas and Srimati Aysha Bai, the third woman to be elected. The other two women members belong to the Congress Party. The Praja Socialist Party contested eight of the 13 seats and lost in all of them. Among the losers was Mr. D. Damodaran Potti, Deputy Speaker of the dissolved Travancore-Cochin Assembly. The Congress Party's successes so far have come mostly from Kottayam district, where out of the 13 seats for which results have been declared so far, the party has won 11. The Congress, Communist and PSP have got four seats each in Malabar, where the 13th seat has gone to a Communist-supported Independent. The present party position in the 126-member House is: Communists 23, Congress 19, PSP 8, Independents 2, total results declared so far 52.
