HDMC officials bid to seal hotel for non-renewal of licence

HUBLI: Protesting against the sealing drive conducted by officials of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, the son of a hotel owner reportedly tried to immolate himself at Old Hubli on Friday.

Tension prevailed in the area for some time following the incident, which was brought under control by the police.

According to the HDMC officials, the Garden Hotel, which was licenced to Sumitrabai Shetty was being run without the licence being renewed. Owing to non-renewal of licence, the officials wanted to seal the hotel. However the son of the license holder, Sudhir Shetty, opposed the move of the corporation and complained that his application for renewal had not been processed.

When the officials tried to lock the hotel under police protection, Sudhir allegedly doused himself in kerosene and threatened to commit suicide. Consequently the HDMC officials took a letter from him and dropped the move of sealing it.

Assistant Commissioner V.S. Pawar said that the letter from the hotelier had been sent to the Revenue Department seeking its opinion on renewal of licence.
