Kamala Kannan in final

HYDERABAD: Seventh-seeded Kamala Kannan of Tamil Nadu shocked Statemate and top-seeded Vinod Sridhar 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5) in the men's singles semifinal of the Circars all India ranking men's tennis tournament at Kakinada on Friday, according to information received here.

Overcoming second set blues after wrapping the first set easily, Kannan was in his elements in crunch game and emerged winner by virtue of his ability to pick the big points in the crucial tie-breaker.

The second-seeded J. Vishnuvardhan (AP) took his appointed place in the final with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7) win in the other semifinal.

Vinod Sridhar had some consolation when he partnered V.M. Ranjeet to lift the doubles title after defeating the pair of Kamala Kannan and Vijay Sunder Prashanth 6-2, 6-2.

The results: Men: Singles: Semifinals: Kamala Kannan (TN) bt Vinod Sridhar (TN) 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5); J. Vishnuvardhan (AP) bt V.M. Ranjeet (TN) 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7).

Doubles: Final: Vinod Sridhar/ V.M. Ranjeet bt Kamala Kannan/ Vijay Sunder Prashanth 6-2, 6-2.

Rohit triumphs

Rohit of Delhi defeated Alla Sridhar of Andhra Pradesh 6-4, 6-4 in the boys' under-14 final of the Punna-AITA all India Super Series/ Talent Series tennis tournament at the SAAP Tennis Complex here on Friday.

In the girls' final, Vaidehi Bhagawat of Maharashtra downed Bhavana Suresh (AP) 7-5, 6-1, 7-6(3).

Vishal Pass of Maharashtra got the better of Ronit Bisht of Delhi 6-4, 6-4 in the boys' under-12 final, while Sheikh Amreen (AP) defeated Y. Sindhura (AP) 6-3, 6-3 in the girls' final of the same category.

The duo of Sai Teja and Tushal Thawani picked the boys' under-14 doubles title defeating the pair of Mohit Mayur and Sai Kartik 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 in the final.

Badminton tournament

The National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) will organise the Satish Dhawan memorial Space Cup ball badminton tournament for Central Government Scientific organisations and reputed clubs from March 11 at the HAL Sports Complex here.

Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Director, NRSA, will inaugurate the event in which 21 teams will be taking part in men's section and four in women's category.
